Installing a travel eSIM takes about two minutes and only needs a Wi-Fi connection. The golden rule: install before you fly, activate when you land. Here is the full process.
Before you start
- Check your phone supports eSIM (iPhone XS+, recent Galaxy/Pixel) and is carrier-unlocked.
- Buy your plan and have the QR code ready (the provider emails it or shows it in their app).
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
On iPhone
- Open Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular) → Add eSIM.
- Choose Use QR Code and scan the code from your provider.
- Label the line (e.g. "Travel") and keep your primary line as default for calls.
- Set the travel eSIM as your data line once you arrive, and turn on Data Roaming for that line (this is normal for travel eSIMs).
On Android
- Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (wording varies by brand).
- Tap Add eSIM or the + next to SIMs, then Download a SIM instead.
- Scan the QR code and confirm the download.
- When you arrive, select the eSIM for Mobile data and enable roaming for that profile.
After you land
Switch your data over to the eSIM line and you should connect automatically within a minute or two. If it does not, toggle Airplane mode on and off, or restart the phone.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Activating too early. Install before you fly, but only switch the line on once you are at your destination — some plans start their validity at first connection.
- Deleting the QR code. Most eSIMs can only be installed once. Keep the email until your trip is over.
- Forgetting data roaming. Travel eSIMs run over roaming by design; leaving it off means no connection.
- Buying the wrong size. Match the data to your trip — see how much you need and compare plans below.
